It's interesting in the way that we are able to obtain it, easier and quicker than ever, but I feel alot of it has lost the richness that helped make music timeless. I don't know if that is just in the production or the digitizing. Something that you get from records. The energy that fills a room. Maybe it is my Era, but I feel like I have lost my song collection to old tapes and scratched c.d.'s. Yes I may splurge on a record now and then....but for the most part I listen to music on YouTube when I have access to the Internet. Do I wish I had mp3s of all my favorite songs, yes. Have you heard the quality of some of the mixes...!? From ancestors who shared song around camp fires. To musicians trying to make a living in today's day and age. The same rings true, if it's heartfelt and brings a meaningful message it will stand the test of time. The idea that music can reach around the world is beautiful. The fact that it is able to do so with less impact on the environment, that is worthy of acknowledgement. But I will always treasure the records in my collection that bring my heart and soul peace and I could never exchange them... I guess what I'm trying to say is the great ones matter.

Re: Ill Communication: “Catch Me If You Can”

I totally agree with you man, I'm constantly conflicted with dropping beats with time stretch boom bap layering even after i play keys over it.... but i love that style its kind of like djing, and you're the selector for the the emcee to do his thing. I as a small time artist live in the gray, which is why everyone as a producer should diversify their pallet and make all kinds of different types of music. I'm currently sampling myself a lot playing guitar and drums. I've been focusing on a few different musical projects that relay on my musical talents and not sampling to kind of help snuff the guilt of me blatantly sampling the drums of ginger baker chopped up over a Grover Washington break. i love sample chopping and flipping! i can't stop but that's why I'm slowing down dropping hip hop to focus on everything else. I've got a project with meta one with bru and one with you one it with a track with illogic and abstract rude over a rare earth sample and a whole bunch of other badass emcees and samples then after that I'm going a lot of other stuff(musically). the article was awesome your progression from wal mart piano to mpc to soft wear to creating your own sound while making beats sampling them and dropping them without clearing the sample. i completely feel you, i took this same path. i could be red handed guilty and I'm not going to stop digging for rare sample flips or even familiar sounds we can all vibe to from all of the years of the culture. dilla pete primo and alchemist all do it on a large scale. but they are kind of in the grey too, but big as hell? anyway great read! ps. i have too many run on sentences in this lol

Re: Ill Communication: “Catch Me If You Can”

Thanks for the feedback. Great angle, really fascinating to hear about the TOOMB catalog. I agree fully in regards to the level of respect hip-hop producers are not shown, however, within another generation or so this lack of respect from gatekeepers will (and already has begun to) fade. With the continued progression of EDM, Trap and every subgenre in between that samples (as influence noted from hip-hop, D&B & techno), eventually our generation will actually have some type of pull with law-makers. Most cutting edge and counterculture genres of any capacity were never respected until enough old people died for that counterculture to become the system itsself. So I guess the solution is to just wait for old people to die.

Re: Ill Communication: “Catch Me If You Can”

Great breakdown of the internal arguments and/or compromises that get made in creating this music. Since I have finally decided to make it official and become a publisher of my own music and not just an affiliated writer, the tactics have changed. And I was like you, an anarchist as far as sampling music, digging in the crates. Catching the sniffles due to the dried mold on records in the 25 cent bin was the biggest consequence I expected to suffer. I figured that unless I sold enough copies to get on the sample cops' radar, I was free to do what I wanted to do.

I had the hope that if I moved enough units to get that much attention, there would be a record company waiting to pick up the tab before it turned into De La Soul or Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" problems. But, after several times being denied the right to clear many of our early TOOMB songs through BMI due to telling the truth about the samples I used, it is clear that trying to go legit is a hassle many artists can't handle.

I now find myself at the crossroads of weeding through which songs I can take complete ownership of and which ones I must in some way say to 'The Man', "You're right, I just took these whole songs and made them my own so I should pay the people who probably tricked the original artists into signing over their publishing." And if they are messing with Soundcloud artists' posting music, this seems like bottom-of-the-barrel scraping or world-class ass-covering. I mean, it's impossible to make a dollar, much less, 10 cents off of Soundcloud technically, right?

Both of your rules/compromises make good sense. You have been studying and thinking about this for a long time I see. There's no doubt that when you have made an unarguably dope song which has an unarguably dope sample as it's foundation you should pay (or give publicly seen, clearly printed props to the artists that created it). But, as you pointed out, I'd rather pay the man/woman, not the greed-head that acquired the publishing (unless said artist owns their own publishing). And on point number two: Until respect is given to how Hip Hop Producers in general create entirely new sounds from recycled sounds, it IS hard to respect copyright/publishing restrictions. The Hip Hop genre itself it not given the respect it deserves in how music of the past (and present) can get restructured and re-purposed with or without diminishing the meaning of the source material. Here's one example: Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" intro was a carbon copy of a song by Spirit. Jimmy Page is still ducking the lawsuit from this now, decades later. But try to sample a Led Zeppelin riff now and see how far you get that song before you get an E-Mail.

You are right, we can't let this place restrictions on HOW we create music, we can only keep the ramifications in mind. Great read, keep educating.

Re: Kansas Funk – Approach x Reggie B

Thanks!
